NINETEEN

FIONA

Scott checked the outside of the lodge, wandering around nearby and calling her name, but Angela and I managed to convince him not to head out any further into the treacherous weather. We reminded him that Olivia needed her daddy there, and he agreed to wait to hear from the police and not take any stupid risks. Everyone seemed concerned about Danni not returning, and they all had a theory they had to share. This was played out against the background noise of Olivia’s wailing, and screaming. At almost twelve months she was on the verge of walking and in her primal need to explore she constantly wrestled Scott to release her each time he picked her up to comfort her. But when he put her down as she wanted, she’d crawl around, picking up on the tension in the room, and screech to be picked up again. Tension was high, everyone was on edge, we jumped at every text ping, and the melting snow falling in clumps off the warm roof of the lodge sounded like someone banging on the door. My heart was in my mouth waiting for the police to arrive.

‘I just tried her again,’ Sam said, his phone in his hand, where it usually was. ‘Now her phone’s completely dead.’

At this, I heard Scott whimper, like an animal in pain.

‘What if she’s just gone for a walk and decided to visit one of the other lodges?’ Jenna suggested.

‘Why would she do that?’ Angela replied, clearly irritated by this.

‘I think what Jenna is saying is has Danni disappeared for a reason? She sent a text to Scott telling him not to look for her, is she just trying to scare us… well, scare Scott?’ I turned to him, and the others all followed my eyes. ‘Do you think she might have any reason to want to… scare you?’

My ex-husband’s expression was sheepish, his eyes shifty.

‘That might be a possibility. As you all know,’ he started, awkwardly, ‘Danni and I had a few words last night. I slept in here with Olivia, and she slept in our bedroom,’ he said. ‘Yes, we were both angry and it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that she’s gone somewhere and she’s now hiding to teach me a lesson. But surely she wouldn’t be so cruel?’

‘Oh she would be,’ Jenna muttered under her breath.

‘I don’t think she’d be cruel.’

‘No, if she has gone somewhere to hide, it isn’t out of cruelty,’ I said, not wanting to play the bitter, jilted wife. I looked at Scott. ‘It’s probably confusion, insecurity, just a misunderstanding?’

‘I think we should call the police and tell them just that,’ Angela said. ‘We don’t want to waste their time, but we can’t just sit here assuming she’s fine, she’s not fine, she’s quite mad really.’ Angela gazed ahead, like she’d just said something perfectly fitting.

Before she could say anything else, I reiterated to Scott that we had to call the police, and he agreed, albeit grudgingly. ‘Okay, yes let’s call them.
